Garage Door Drum Replacement

Cable drums sit at the ends of the torsion shaft and wind the cables as the door moves. Worn or damaged drums throw the door out of balance.

The Part That Keeps Your Door Level
Overview

The Part That Keeps Your Door Level

Cable drums are the grooved spools mounted at each end of the torsion spring shaft, above your garage door. As the door moves, the lift cables wind neatly into those grooves.

The drums are what keep both sides of the door rising and lowering evenly. When a drum is worn, cracked, or the wrong size for the door, the cables spool unevenly — and the door goes crooked, binds, or comes off-track.

Steward replaces cable drums in correctly-matched pairs and re-sets the cable tension, so your door sits level and travels smoothly from top to bottom.

FAQ

Drum Replacement Questions

What does a garage door cable drum do?
The drums are grooved spools that wind the lift cables as the door moves, keeping both sides rising evenly. They are essential to a level, balanced door.
Why is my door still crooked after a cable repair?
If a new cable didn't fix the crookedness, the drums are a likely culprit — a worn or wrong-size drum spools the cable unevenly. We'll check the drums and re-set the tension.
Should both drums be replaced together?
Yes — like cables and springs, drums should be matched as a pair so the door stays balanced.
How long does drum replacement take?
Most drum replacements are a same-day repair, usually completed in about an hour.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much does garage door repair cost?
It depends on the problem and the parts involved — a roller replacement is very different from a spring or panel job. That's why we inspect the door first and give you an honest, transparent estimate before any work begins. We never start until you approve the price.
Do you offer same-day service?
Yes. We offer same-day availability across DFW for most repairs, and our technicians carry the most common parts on the truck so many jobs are finished in a single visit.
Is it safe to fix a broken spring myself?
No. Garage door springs are under extreme tension and are the most dangerous part of the door. Spring and cable work should always be done by a trained technician with the right tools.
How long does a garage door spring last?
Most springs are rated for around 10,000 open-close cycles — roughly 7 to 12 years depending on how often you use the door. If one spring breaks, we usually recommend replacing both.
